Ignition electrodes and ionization electrodes are used for the ignition of gaseous fuel in gas appliances. They operate on the principle of ignition by jumping of a high voltage spark. Here, the center electrode must not be permanently in the flame. The ignition electrode and ionization probe are placed together in the combustion chamber of the gas appliance as gas boilers, water heaters, gas stoves, etc.
The ignition electrodes can be used as ionization probes and vice-versa. But it is always necessary to respected their location, the ignition electrode must be outside the flame, and only the central electrode of the ionization probe must be in the flame.
Ionization electrodes are used as combustion sensors in gas devices. The center electrode is permanently in the flame. The rest of the parts of the probe must be positioned in the burner space in such a way that they are not subjected to natural cooling.
